About The City and District of North Vancouver

North Vancouver summer temperatures average 17.3C (63.1F) and winter temperatures average 3.2C (38F). Population: City - 41, 475; District - 83,000.

The City of North Vancouver is a dynamic urban municipality, comprised of a mix of specialty shopping, thriving commercial areas, and diverse housing opportunities, as well as being a key transportation node and major maritime centre. The City of North Vancouver, along with the District of West Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver, make up the geographic area known as Vancouver's North Shore.

North Vancouver City boasts an employment amount that exceeds the resident labour force. Indeed, the North Shore Region is one of only two regions in Greater Vancouver where future employment is projected to grow at a faster rate than population growth.

Historically, the City core was the first North Shore area to develop as a service area for the burgeoning pre-World War I logging and sawmilling operations set up on the North Shore. Access in the late 1800's and early 1900's was limited to boats and a ferry system.

Surrounding the City of North Vancouver on three sides, and bordering the District of West Vancouver on its western boundary, the District of North Vancouver is the largest of the three North Shore municipalities in both size and population. Indeed, with a population of approximately 83,000 (and growing) the District is home to almost half of all the people that live on the North Shore.

Despite its ever-growing population, the District of North Vancouver remains a community of neighbourhood "villages" from the old-fashioned charm of Edgemont (with its boutiques, coffee-houses and local restaurants) to the picturesque beauty of Deep Cove where the mountains and the ocean meet the shore. The District has a strong environmental commitment "to develop an attractive community in harmony with nature."

The District is a place to play, explore and be inspired. You won't be disappointed.
